Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I use MeloTune?

1. Choose a music source: Apple Music, Spotify, or Local Music (Settings → Music Service)

2. Open the app — MeloTune starts playing a station picked for this moment. The playing card shows a pause overlay, like every station.

3. Steer whenever you like: voice, text, the dial/meters, a station card, or a Journey

Three ways to set your mood:

  • Voice: Tap mic and speak your feelings
  • Text: Tap keyboard and type your mood
  • Dial/Meters: Rotate dial or drag gauges

The bottom bar scrolls: Presets · Favorites · Journey · Mates · Settings. Tap the mood chart at the top to open Journey.

MeloTune remembers your settings between sessions.

How do Emotion and Energy work?

Two values capture your mood on a 0-99 scale:

EMOTION (0-99): How you feel

  • 0-29: Sad, melancholic
  • 30-69: Neutral, contemplative
  • 70-99: Happy, euphoric

ENERGY (0-99): Your intensity level

  • 0-29: Calm, relaxed
  • 30-69: Moderate
  • 70-99: Active, intense

Adjust using the dial, meters, or voice/text input. MeloTune learns how YOU respond to music — the same song gets different predictions for different listeners.

What are the display modes?

Display modes available via header buttons:

  • DIAL: Vinyl-style rotating dial for mood adjustment. Tap E or N above the dial to choose which one it adjusts.
  • METERS: Twin gauges with filter knobs. Drag gauges to adjust mood.
  • TRACKS: Album card with playlist. View and tap songs directly. The album card's right rail has heart (favorite), repeat, add-to-playlist, and block-artist controls. The book button at the bottom left of the card opens the Track Wiki.
  • MEMORY: Heatmap of where your listening has clustered — over a week, a month, or a season. Tap to flip → pattern cards you can listen to in one tap.

Above the modes is the mood chart — where you are in mood-space, where the current track is, and how the playlist clusters around you. Tap it to open Journey.

Music Services

Which music sources work?

Three options:

  • Apple Music: Requires subscription
  • Spotify: Requires Premium subscription
  • Local Music: Your own imported music files (no subscription needed)

Connect services in Settings. Switch between them anytime.

What does MeloTune do with my Apple Music?

Two things, both on your phone:

  • Your first sound comes from your own history. When you connect Apple Music, MeloTune reads what you've played recently and most — on the device, through Apple's own MusicKit — and starts you in your real top genre instead of a default. It never overrides a genre you pick in MeloTune, and it re-reads weekly so Mates' idea of your taste follows you.
  • Keep what it finds. While Apple Music is playing, tap the pill under the player ("Apple Music · Classical · 62 Tracks") → Keep in Apple Music. The curation becomes a playlist in your library, named for the mood and the day, authored by MeloTune.
  • ❤ into your library, if you want. Settings → Music Service → "Add ❤ tracks to my Apple Music library" (off by default): every favorite you mark in MeloTune is added to your Apple Music library.

Nothing about your library leaves the phone.

How do I use Local Music?

Two steps to use your own music files:

1. Favorites tab

Go to Settings → Favorites → Import → Local Music to add your music folders.

2. Music Service tab

Select Local Music as your primary service.

Supported formats: MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, AIFF

Local music works offline and gets mood-analyzed automatically.

How do I switch music services?

1. Open Settings (Settings tile in the bottom bar)

2. Music Service tab

3. Tap Apple Music, Spotify, or Local Music

4. Tap 'CONNECT' if not connected

The checkmarked service is active. Switching refreshes your playlist. Until a source is connected, MeloTune holds curation and asks you to finish setup rather than playing silence.

Spotify won't play — what's wrong?

Almost always one of two things, and MeloTune now names which.

  • Premium. Spotify only lets other apps start playback on Premium accounts. On a free account you can browse, curate and save here, but the music itself has to be started in the Spotify app.
  • Nothing awake to play on. MeloTune plays THROUGH the Spotify app, and Spotify will only accept a start command on a device it already considers active. Open Spotify, play anything for a second, come back, and tap the station again.

Apple Music and Local Music have neither restriction.

How do I select a Spotify device?

Two steps to select your playback device:

1. Music Service tab

Select Spotify as your primary service.

2. Playback Device section

This section appears after selecting Spotify. Tap a device to play there, or use 'REFRESH DEVICES' if needed.

Tip: If device doesn't appear, open Spotify app, play any song briefly, then refresh.

Voice & Text Input

How do I use voice input?

Tap the mic button and speak naturally:

  • Mood descriptions: "Happy and energetic", "Relaxed evening vibes"
  • Activities: "Workout music", "Study session"
  • Artists/Songs: "Play songs like Coldplay", "Something similar to Bohemian Rhapsody"
  • Genres: "Jazz music", "90s hip hop"

MeloTune understands context and finds matching music.

How do I use text input?

Tap the keyboard button and type your mood:

  • "Chill morning coffee"
  • "Intense focus for coding"
  • "Sad but hopeful"
  • "Party vibes"

Works the same as voice - type naturally.

What voice commands work?

Playback:

  • "Play", "Pause", "Stop"
  • "Next song", "Skip"
  • "Previous", "Go back"

Mood adjustments (keep current genre):

  • "More energy", "Less energy"
  • "Something more chill", "More upbeat"
  • "Happier music", "Sadder"

Mood with new music (the LLM picks a fitting genre):

  • "Play some relaxing music"
  • "Play workout music"
  • "Play something for studying"

Genre by name:

  • "Play chill hip-hop", "Play heavy metal"
  • "Play rain sounds", "Play forest sounds"

Stations and artists:

  • "Play [station name]"
  • "Play songs like Coldplay"
  • "Something similar to Bohemian Rhapsody"

Tip: with Genre Lock on, mood requests stay inside your locked genre.

Mood Insights

How do I open Mood Insights?

Tap the 'MOOD' handle on the right side (opposite the GENRE handle).

The panel shows:

  • MoodLock toggle (locks your mood against drift)
  • Emotion, Stability, and Energy gauges
  • 'Show Insights' button for detailed cards

The genre panel on the opposite side has its own Genre Lock toggle — see the Genre System section.

What do the gauges show?

Three visualizations:

  • EMOTION: Your current vs average Emotion (E)
  • STABLE: Mood stability percentage
  • ENERGY: Your current vs average Energy (N)

Inner arc = current, outer arc = average.

What insight cards are available?

Tap 'Show Insights' to reveal:

  • Emotional Insight: Current mood vocabulary term, definition, and what music is doing for you
  • Today's Mood Summary: Daily vocabulary, headline, stats (avg E/N, stability, peak hour)
  • Your Weekly Story: Theme, key vocabulary, narrative journey
  • Listening Journey: Total listening time, sessions, emerging patterns
What do the insight buttons do?

On the Emotional Insight card:

  • Dismiss: Clear the insight
  • Helpful: Mark as useful (improves future insights)
  • Save: Keep for later reference

Stations

What are the three Stations rows?

All three rows are visible at once — no tab toggle.

  • Picked for You — stations for the moment you're in. Ready For You leads (on-device prediction); LLM-picked cards follow. REFRESH pulls a fresh batch.
  • What You Saved — your captures. Tap '+ Capture this moment' to save whatever is currently playing as a mood-anchored station.
  • Stations You've Lived In — automatic. Play three tracks from a recommended station and it's promoted here. Survives reinstall via your private iCloud.
What's Ready For You?

The leading card under WHAT MELOTUNE PICKED FOR YOU. Pure on-device prediction — no LLM, no cloud. The on-device model learns which moods you keep returning to and which stations you actually play, and has a playlist waiting when you open the app — that is what starts playing at launch (Settings → Music Service → Play when MeloTune opens; on by default), and the card shows the pause overlay while it does. Opening the app never restarts MeloTune's own music: if it's MeloTune's last session still playing, it picks up where you were. If something else is playing — another app, Apple Music on its own, Spotify — opening MeloTune starts fresh, because switching to a music app is asking for its music. Turn the preference off if you'd rather it only ever curated the card and left your audio alone.

On the card: the genre and the E/N it was curated at. The pick makes its case by being right, not by explaining itself.

It refreshes on its own as your mood moves; a card lasts about 30 minutes. Long-press → Dismiss if it's wrong: MeloTune treats that as a no for that genre and won't hand you the same card straight back.

Brand new? The slot says "learning your taste" until it has seen enough listening to predict — play anything and it fills in. On your very first launches, the pick leads with the genre you chose in setup.

What are the other recommended cards?

LLM-picked cards next to Ready For You. The picks are tuned to your current Emotion / Energy, time of day, your activity (walking, cycling, driving, stationary — when motion permission is granted), Genre Lock if on, and the mood of any listeners connected to you.

Tap REFRESH on the row to pull a fresh batch.

If a pick fails, the row does not go empty: Ready For You still leads (pure on-device) and six starter stations spread across the mood map fill the rail. Those six are a place to begin, not a read of your moment; they use your own top genres where MeloTune knows them. REFRESH re-rolls them and the real picks take over.

How do I save a station?

Tap the dashed '+ Capture this moment' placeholder at the start of WHAT YOU SAVED. The system reads the live mood and anchors the station to it — works on any playback (curated, custom playlist, favorites, anything).

You can rename, pin to top, or delete saved stations later via long-press.

How do Stations You've Lived In work?

Automatic, no setup. Play three tracks from any recommended station and it's promoted to this row. Survives reinstall via your private iCloud — log in on a new device and your lived-in stations are there.

Think of it as your music identity — the moods you actually return to, not just the ones you saved.

What are Presets?

A catalog of mood archetypes — RELAXATION, FOCUS, ENERGY, MOOD — under the Presets tile in the bottom bar. One tap plays a preset straight away. Presets stay in the catalog; WHAT YOU SAVED is only for stations you captured yourself.

How do I manage Stations?
  • Tap: play the station
  • Long-press: rename, pin to top, or delete

The currently playing station shows a pause overlay; tap it to pause, tap again to resume. Stations sync across your devices via iCloud.

Mood Dial

How do I use the Mood Dial?

The dial works like a vinyl record:

  • Rotate clockwise: Increase value
  • Rotate counter-clockwise: Decrease value
  • Tap center: Switch between Emotion and Energy modes

The current mode shows highlighted in the header.

The vinyl spins while music plays!

What does the dial display show?
  • Album artwork in center (when playing)
  • Current track info below
  • Emotion/Energy values in header
  • Mood label (e.g., 'Contemplative', 'Euphoric')

The color changes based on your mood position.

Meters & Filter Knobs

How do I use the Meters?

Twin gauges:

  • EMOTION gauge (left): Drag arc to adjust (0-99)
  • ENERGY gauge (right): Drag arc to adjust (0-99)

The needle moves as you drag. Values update in real-time.

What do the filter knobs do?

Four knobs fine-tune your music discovery:

MATCH: Mood precision

  • Strict: Exact mood match
  • Mod: Moderate flexibility
  • Loose: Wide variety

FAME: Popularity

  • Deep: Hidden gems
  • Mix: Balanced
  • Hits: Popular tracks

ERA: Release period

  • Retro: Classic tracks
  • Any: All eras
  • New: Recent releases

VOCAL: Voice preference

  • Inst: Instrumental only
  • Any: Mixed
  • Vocal: Singing preferred
How do I use the knobs?

Drag each knob to rotate between three positions.

Haptic feedback confirms your selection.

Settings save automatically and apply to next playlist generation.

Genre System

How does MeloTune choose a genre?

Every genre has a home on the mood map. When you set a mood, the genres whose music naturally lives there are the candidates; when you name a genre, the mood dial is read inside it.

A genre outside MeloTune's vocabulary (200+ genres) is dropped rather than approximated.

How do I change genres?
  • Swipe the genre display left or right
  • Tap the genre display to open the picker
  • Say a genre word in voice ("play heavy metal")

Genre changes apply to the next station.

What is Genre Lock?

A toggle at the top of the genre panel. When locked, recommendations, background curation, and voice commands all stay inside your chosen genre.

What changes when locked:

  • "Play relax music" while locked to Hip-Hop → low-energy hip-hop, not ambient
  • "More chill" stays inside the locked genre
  • Recommended Stations only suggest within the locked genre

How to release:

  • Toggle off manually
  • Pick a different genre from the panel or picker
  • Say a different genre word in voice ("play heavy metal")

The lock survives app restart.

Playback Controls

How do I control playback?

Main controls:

  • Play/Pause: Tap center play button
  • Skip: Tap next (▶▶) or swipe album left
  • Previous: Tap prev (◀◀) or swipe album right

In TRACKS view:

  • Tap any song in playlist to play it
  • Current song shows highlighted
How do I find similar songs?

In TRACKS view, tap the 'Similar' button on the album card.

MeloTune creates a new playlist of songs similar to the current track.

How do I play a full album?

In TRACKS view:

1. Tap album card to flip to details

2. Tap the 'Album' button

MeloTune loads all tracks from the current song's album.

Know the Track

What is the Track Wiki?

A short, on-demand brief about whatever's playing — artist, era, scene, why this track sits where it does in mood-space. Useful when a song catches you and you want one paragraph of context, not a Wikipedia rabbit-hole.

How do I open it?

In TRACKS view, tap the book button at the bottom left of the track detail card.

The brief is generated by MeloTune's built-in AI — nothing to set up, no account needed. No analytics, no upload of your library.

Favorites & Playlists

How do I save favorites?

In TRACKS view:

1. Tap album card to flip

2. Tap the heart icon

Favorites are saved with mood context so you can rediscover them later.

Access via 'Favorites' in bottom navigation.

How do I add to a playlist?

1. Tap album card to flip (in TRACKS view)

2. Tap playlist icon (list with +)

3. Select existing playlist or create new

Playlists appear in the Playlists panel on main screen.

How do I manage playlists?

In the Playlists panel:

  • Tap playlist: Play it
  • Long-press: Rename or delete
  • Swipe left: Quick delete

Playlists sync via iCloud across your devices.

Real-time Music Mood

What is Real-time Music Mood?

MeloTune analyzes each track as it plays:

  • Detects the song's emotional content
  • Updates the mood display in real-time
  • Adjusts recommendations based on what you're hearing

The dial/meters reflect the current track's mood, not just your target mood.

Memory

What is Memory?

Your listening archive: a heatmap of where your listening has actually clustered, over a week, a month, or a season. Brighter cells = more plays in that mood region; hue follows the dominant genre. Tap any cell to revisit that mood.

Find it in the player tab strip: DIAL / METERS / TRACKS / MEMORY.

What are the pattern cards?

Tap the card to flip → "patterns you might not notice" written for your week. Examples: "you keep revisiting Vintage Sentiment alternative," "your highest-energy listens cluster in dance/EDM."

Pattern cards are written by MeloTune's built-in AI — nothing to configure.

What does LISTEN do?

Starts a fresh curated session right now at that mood anchor — same path as picking a mood manually, just pre-set to the pattern (or the cell you tapped on the heatmap). The music changes immediately.

If you want to keep it as a Station, use the "+ Capture this moment" placeholder in WHAT YOU SAVED once playback is going.

What's the feel-right loop in Insights?

After you tap LISTEN, a card appears in the Insights panel: "feel right?" with 👍 / Drop / dismiss.

  • 👍 keeps the pattern and tells future suggestions to lean this way.
  • Drop excludes that mood region from future patterns.
  • Dismiss clears the card without recording a verdict.

Verdicts sync across your devices via your private iCloud.

Journey

What is a Journey?

A destination for your listening, reached a step at a time — a slow tide, not a skipping DJ. Pick where you want to arrive anywhere on the mood map — drag, the name follows your finger, lift to choose — and how long to take: 20, 40 or 60 minutes. MeloTune charts the whole route first — every leg's tracks, sized to its minutes, in order — and plays it as one queue, so it keeps going with the phone locked or in your pocket. Where your genre can't reach a leg's mood, that leg borrows a neighbouring genre; a sleep destination always lands on sleep music (ambient, piano, new age…), never on a loud genre that happens to have a quiet track. Choose STOP · SLEEP and the music ends by itself after the route's last song.

Open it from the Journey tile in the bottom bar, or by tapping the mood chart at the top of the player.

How does a Journey behave?
  • Charting takes a moment (the card says which leg); then the music starts and the ring follows the clock.
  • The Journey tile shows the countdown while one is steering, so you can see it from anywhere in the player.
  • The route is one queue, so it plays through with the screen locked. It keeps its place if you leave and come back (a very old one is let go rather than resumed).
  • STOP STEERING ends it early; when you arrive, the destination is yours and DONE clears it.
  • Past journeys are listed below with how many arrived; AGAIN replays one when nothing is steering.
What are the TODAY journeys?

Your own daily rituals, learned — not a fixed 'Daily Calm at 8'. Once MeloTune has seen enough of your days it names two journeys: a Morning lift toward the mood you usually reach in the morning, at the minute you usually get there; and a Wind down toward where your evenings settle, ending in silence when that mood is calm enough to sleep to. They appear at the top of the Journey room with START and a bell. The bell is a daily reminder at that learned time — tap it on the Lock Screen and the journey starts. Nothing is invented: no pattern, no card. Reminders use notifications; switch them off with the bell or in Settings → Notifications.

Music Mates

What are Music Mates?

Listeners whose taste resonates with yours — up to three a day, on the same Wi-Fi or across the internet. Open Mates from the bottom bar. Three tabs:

  • Friends: people you have accepted. Each one keeps their mood card, a HEAR IT button, and the handle they shared.
  • Matches: today's catches. Each arrives SEALED — open it to see the resonance and their taste card.
  • Inbox: hellos waiting on you. Accept or decline; accepted ones move to Friends.

Discovery is anonymous: your taste travels, your history doesn't; faces never.

How do I get matched?

Turn on discovery in Mates ("Be findable"). Your taste signature — the genres, moods and rhythms you actually live in — is what matching reads; it leaves the index within the hour if you turn discovery off.

A match needs real resonance: someone next to your taste, not a mirror of it. On a quiet day the screen tells you why — no other listeners around yet, nobody discoverable, or only echoes — rather than inventing a match.

How do signals and connections work?

When someone's worth a hello, send a signal from their card. It lands in their Inbox.

  • Accept reveals both ways at once: you each see the handles the other chose to share, nothing more. Accepting needs a handle of your own, so nobody collects contacts while staying unreachable.
  • Decline is silent — they are never told.
  • Unanswered, a signal expires quietly after 30 days.

Accepted people live in the Friends tab. If a friend sends a new hello later, accepting it again replaces what you hold — handles and moods move. Handles are between you two only.

What is the Sunday constellation?

Every Sunday morning MeloTune names your week from what actually played — the moods you listened from, drawn as a constellation you can share. A notification says when it's ready; a week too quiet to name simply waits for the next one.

Widgets

Which widgets are there?

Two Home Screen widgets — long-press your Home Screen, tap +, search MeloTune:

  • MeloTune: a clock synced with your mood. Tap it to play your last station without opening the app.
  • Music Mate: your mood and the day's catches at a glance.

Sleep & Nature Sounds

How do I play sleep or nature sounds?

Either:

  • Voice: "Play rain sounds", "Play ocean", "Play forest sounds", "Play white noise"
  • Genre picker: choose Sleep or Nature genres

MeloTune routes the request through the same curator, but biased toward long, low-energy, instrumental tracks suited to falling asleep or background ambience.

Can I mix them with my normal music?

Yes. With Genre Lock off, you can flow between sleep / nature and your usual genres just by saying or picking what you want. With Genre Lock on, MeloTune stays inside whichever you locked.

Being Found

How far can other listeners find me?

In Mates, under FINDABLE — REACH, you choose:

  • This Wi-Fi — only listeners on the same network can find you.
  • Everywhere — listeners beyond your network can find you too, through the MeloTune community channel.

Either way the same thing travels: your taste signature — the genres you actually play, your mood map for the week, hashed artist names, your listening rhythm and your country. Never the tracks you played, never your handles, never anything finer than your country. Reach changes only how FAR it goes, never WHAT is sent.

Turn discovery off and your signature leaves the index within the hour.

What can I match on?

By default, your whole taste. Under MATCH ME ON you can narrow it to one of your favourite genres — the row shows each one with the share of your listening it accounts for, so "LO FI 34%" means a third of what you played.

Choosing a genre only changes WHO is eligible for your own draw; it never changes how anyone is scored, and it is never sent to another listener. If a day comes up empty because of it, the screen says so and points you back here.

Your card, at the top of Mates, is what matching reads: your mood map for the week and the genres it found. Tap SHARE to post it.

AI & Privacy

Which AI is doing the work?

MeloTune's built-in AI — hosted by MeloTune, nothing to set up, no account or key needed. It handles natural-language voice/text parsing and short text generation like the Track Wiki.

Two things also run entirely on your device:

  • Apple Intelligence steps in on-device when the hosted service can't be reached (iOS 26+ on eligible hardware).
  • A small local model (LNN) runs the Cognition Panel and proactive curation offline, always.
Which features use the AI?
  • AI-picked recommended station cards — the decoder picks next to Ready For You under WHAT MELOTUNE PICKED FOR YOU.
  • Track Wiki — the quick-glance card about whatever is playing.
  • Voice / text music curation — richer natural language mapped to a fitting mood + genre.

Everything else — Ready For You, mood matching via dials, the Stations panel, Mood Map, mesh — runs without any AI call.

What leaves my device?
  • Music service calls (Apple Music / Spotify) — only the queries needed to fetch tracks.
  • AI requests — only when a feature explicitly needs them (e.g. Track Wiki, voice intent). They go to MeloTune's own AI service, are answered, and are not stored — prompts are never logged or kept. When Apple Intelligence handles a request instead, it runs on-device.
  • Mood presence — only when you are connected to another listener, and only an abstracted mood / now-playing signal.
  • Mates — only when discovery is on: your taste signature (genres, moods, rhythms — never tracks or history) travels to other listeners so a match can be scored on their device.

Motion (walking, running, cycling, driving) is read on-device from Core Motion, with your permission, to bias picks; it never leaves the phone.

Nothing else. No analytics on your listening, no library upload, no profile sold.
